DISILLUSIONED (SONG)

Disillusioned’ was a turning point for the band in a couple of ways. First, it was the first song to get a public airing that actually had Natasha Spencer on guitar. Up until that point the songs on, say, the band MySpace player were songs I’d recorded as The Malfated previous to meeting Natasha, even though she was naturally credited as the current guitarist, and a lot of people naturally presumed that she had appeared on the recordings. It was also the first and only song I co-wrote with Natasha. It was the fourth song recorded for the [‘Rat Candy’] CD, as we’d already recorded ‘Mr. Brown Nose’, ‘Star Bar’, and ‘Smile In A Jar’. We didn’t use those versions of ‘Star Bar’ and ‘Smile In A Jar’ so if you own the album you may as well consider it the second song recorded for ‘Rat Candy’.

I had to write the lyrics to ‘Disillusioned’ three times, because I kept misplacing them. Each time I did my best to remember the previous lyrics, but I bet if you put all three lyrics together it’d look like a game of Chinese Whispers. I never did find the first two attempts. The lyrics used were written the night before the song was recorded, in an ‘oh shit, I can’t find the fucking lyrics!’ rush.”

“Natasha always maintained that she couldn’t write music, but did admit to once writing the music for a song while at secondary school. It was for her music class, they were split into groups and told to write a song that they would record at a studio, that would then appear on a compilation CD, a kind of vanity pressing. So I asked Natasha if I could hear the CD. I thought the song itself, which I forget the name of, was shit, largely due to the arrangement and the vocal melody, but I thought the guitar music that Natasha had written had potential, it was pretty good in places. So I basically wrote a new song based on bits of the music that Natasha had written. I got rid of the crappy vocal melody, which was really awful and didn’t follow the music, and wrote my own after rearranging the music into a more traditional verse-chorus format as it was quite messy. I wrote fresh lyrics, and changed some of the chords as bits sounded too similar to another song for comfort. We ended up with a brand new Malfated song - ‘Disillusioned’ - the second song written for The Malfated while Natasha was in the band. Ironically, Natasha didn’t get a credit on the CD she did for school due to an administration error, so the poor girl wrote the music and was the only person not mentioned on the credits.
